4 Tips to Help Protect Your Home From Burglars
Home security is a top concern for every homeowner. Whether you have a family that you want to protect or you live alone and want to stay safe, these tips are great ways to safeguard yourself, your family, and your belongings.
Tip #1: Don’t leave empty boxes on the curb
Although most people wouldn’t look twice at your home’s trash or recycling, burglars have a keen eye for it. Empty boxes mean new purchases or gifts and a lot of them even say the package’s contents right on them. Take a large, brand-new flat screen TV box that has a huge picture of the TV on it and lists all of its impressive features. This not only notifies a burglar that you have just bought a new TV, but it often displays the ticket price of the item. So remember, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure! Make sure you fold up the empty boxes and put them inside a closed recycling bin or dispose them in a proper recycling center.
Tip #2: Be sure you maintain your property
Having a well kept home is a great idea for many reasons. Aside from the aesthetic purposes, it also helps fend off criminals looking for abandoned houses. If your yard isn’t maintained, your holiday decorations are still up in February, or there are leaves all over your driveway, it’s a sign to burglars that you might be on vacation or that you may be away for an extended period of time. Keep your property in good shape to avoid being an easy target!
Tip #3: Invest in adequate lighting
This might seem like an obvious tip, but all too often people take it for granted. Exterior lighting is a great tool when it comes to intimidating burglars and could deter them altogether. Consider buying automatic lighting features like dusk-to-dawn adapters to discourage criminals from thinking you aren’t home. More lighting means fewer burglars, so let there be light!
Tip #4: Incorporate smart-home technology
The number one reason consumers are buying smart-home technology is because it makes them feel safer. While traditional burglar alarms certainly help, there are now many new ways to better protect your home from break-ins. For starters, many companies now offer smart alarms that can be activated/deactivated from your mobile device wherever you are. Security cameras, even in the form of a smart doorbell, are effective ways to catch a robber and call the police or capture their images, later useful in criminal investigations. Smart locks are also superior to conventional locks as they can be triggered remotely, assuring that they are always in use. Additional technologies that can prevent burglaries are smart lights, shades, and music systems that can be turned on when you aren’t home, giving the illusion that you are. Smart-home technology is an excellent investment for both your safety and the value of your home!
